Former Lieutenant Governors of Ontario

Lieutenant Governors are appointed by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister of Canada and the Federal Cabinet. The appointment is for a period of not less than five years and the salary is paid by the federal government.

The complex list of leaders listed below is due to the consitutional changes to the region we now know as the Province of Ontario. From 1760 - 1792, the Province of Ontario had Governors, from 1792 - 1841, Upper Canada had Lieutenant Governors, from 1841 - 1867, Canada West had Governors General, and from 1867 until the present, the Province of Ontario has had Lieutenant Governors once again.
