Armed Forces Council


The Armed Forces Council is the senior military body of the Canadian Forces. It meets regularly to advise the Chief of the Defence Staff on broad military matters pertaining to the command, control, and administration of the Canadian Forces and to help the Chief of the Defence Staff make decisions. The Canadian Armed Forces Council is the equivalent of the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The Armed Forces Council is chaired by the Chief of the Defence Staff, generally meets at least once per month, and includes the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, the Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff, the Environmental Chiefs of Staff, and other senior military advisors.

The current members of the Armed Forces Council are:
  • General Walt Natynczyk- Chief of the Defence Staff
  • Vice-Admiral Denis Rouleau - Vice Chief of the Defence Staff
  • Vice-Admiral Dean McFadden - Chief of the Maritime Staff
  • Lieutenant-General Peter Devlin - Chief of the Land Staff
  • Lieutenant-General André Deschamps - Chief of the Air Staff
  • Rear-Admiral Andrew Smith - Chief Military Personnel
  • Major-General Dennis Tabbernor - Chief of Reserves and Cadets
  • Brigadier-General Blaise Cathcart - Judge Advocate General
  • Major-General J.M.C. Rousseau - Chief of Defence Intelligence
  • Chief Petty Officer 1st Class Bob Cléroux - Chief Warrant Officer
